What The Internet Didn’t Tell Me

During my walk I wrote a notes page to help my future planning. Some of these things are very personalised, but they sum up the information/confirmation I only got through experience.

Food/water

  1. I used 1.5l of water during a day of walking (not including camp water).
  2. I used 2l of water at camp (dinner, coco, breakfast, cleaning).
  3. 100g of oats for breakfast was way too much. 60g would have been better – this changed during the trip, slowly increasing. By the end of the trip 100g was the right amount.

Gear

  1. A 220g can of gas lasts ages with a weekender pot ~10 days.
  2. Camp shoes would have been nice for spending half a day in camp – I added a note later saying happy to go without. I still never take camp shoes.
  3. The bin bag used to waterproof my mat, doubled as an excellent tarp.
  4. Sleeping bag stuff sack made a brilliant pillow.
  5. I used my head torch an average of 20mins per night.

Clothes

  1. Wool socks were amazing – These are the socks I took
  2. Gloves were a must – They were just cheap, one size fits all gloves.
  3. Sports bras just makes my boobs extra sweaty – this was probably just my particularly bra, but a normal comfortable bra does everything you need.
  4. Two pairs of thermals made a big difference.
  5. Clean sleeping socks were great.
  6. Long sleeved shirt to protect from the sun was a good choice.

Hygiene/Repair

  1. Cleaning sponge was very useful. If somethings really stuck on throw in some sand during cleaning.
  2. ST are better than tampons and worth the weight – (further experience after this trip I would recommend a menstrual cup).
  3. Wet wipes are important while on my period.
  4. Lip balm would have been good to bring.
  5. Freesole shoe sole glue worked well and it was used regularly.

Other

  1. 15kg pack was really comfortable, 20kg was too heavy.
  2. Walking by moonlight is beautiful, but it can make navigation more challenging. If the route is marked with reflective signs, then navigating my head torch is almost easier – the Larapinta markers are reflective.
  3. Book (Lolita) lasted 12 walking days and 1 rest day. I didn’t spend a lot of my day reading.
