Wild Camping along the Three Lochs Way

Summary

There isn’t heaps of easy camping along the trail, but there is enough if you are a little flexible with your day lengths. The main points are to avoid:

  • The camping restriction area between the Glen Douglas Road and Arrochar. There aren’t very many areas which you could easy camp here anyway. It’s steep either side of the trail. The restriction says you need a permit, but there doesn’t seem to be a possibility to get a permit for this area. My solution was just to avoid this area – see shaded area on the below map along the top of loch long.
  • The other area you can’t camp is near Garelochhead where there are a few km where you walk through a military base. See the area below which is military base. I would probably avoid camping too near each end just for peace of mind.

My Camping Experiences/Locations

We followed these trail notes: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lochlomond/three-lochs-way.shtml and headed North from Balloch Station

Night 1

The first night we camped in the woods just outside Helensburgh. It had a nice creek with flowing water. Plenty of spots to put your tent, however you were visible from the trail and close enough to town that you got dog walkers walking past. No one seemed to mind us camping there. We were up in a corner so weren’t bothering anyone.

There was another notable camping spot I saw the following morning. It was an hour + further along the trail, after getting through a few fields of cows. It was just as you rejoin the road, but it was near a little stream and the road was very quiet. There’s a stile over the fence and a decent flat area for one or two tents. See the image below.

Night 2

The second night we camped in another little wooded area. It was near a train line, but this didn’t run often and stopped completely quite early. Again, there was a nice little creek. It was right after a minor detour as the existing bridge was falling apart.

This was the last decent camping spot for a while as after the next hill you end up on fire track, so besides camping in the middle of a dirt road you’re pretty limited for another few hours of plodding.

Other Mentions

We walked right through Helensburgh where there are a few shops and takeaway spots including a 6am – midnight garage to get yourself some snacks/a drink etc.

There is also a little village shop just before the Arrochar/Tarbert Station to get a cup of tea/ some top up snacks.
